swashbuckle

/ˈswɒʃbʌk(ə)l/

verb
gerund or present participle: swashbuckling

engage in daring and romantic adventures with bravado or flamboyance.

In a half successful attempt to add a little greenery to the boat, we recently hung two pot plants above our galley bench-top. Both are on the same schedule of bi-weekly watering and monthly fertilising, however, one grows vigorously while the other seems to just… well, survive. It is not dying, it is just that it is not growing. It is, of course, blissfully unaware that it is being outdone by its neighbour, and this makes me ponder… If it were scient, would it care about being the sad looking one?

Why this nonsense about plants? You’re here after all, to read about a sailing family. A family with very little prior sailing experience, planning to cut the lines and sail their home in whichever direction the wind is blowing.

As we make new acquaintances outside of the cruising community, and there have been a few lately, we generally get one of two possible reactions when we reveal our choices and plans. It’s either a politely masked version of “Good for you, but you’re nuts” or a more direct version of “Good for you, but you’re nuts”.

Let me assure you, we are mostly sane. These new acquaintances living their comfortable suburban lives are quite simply akin to the blissfully unaware plant. They are following the generally agreed upon ideal path of wealth accumulation followed by death, only forgetting to take time to actually live. When we talk about our ideas of a swashbuckling life visiting far away shores and embracing the distant flavours, sounds, colours, cultures and adventures our world has to offer, we come across insane… Are we? Really?

Living an entire life in the same twenty kilometre radius of suburbia and catching the same bus to work for decades… I beg your pardon, but that’s nuts. You only get one chance at life, don’t waste it by playing it safe.

Fools’ Gold

So maybe you think we are just dreamers and our pursuit is not achievable, but the evidence suggests otherwise. There are thousands out there right now doing what we are going to do. There are plenty of examples of average people like you and I who have taken their family around the world just to return home and decide to keep going for a second loop. Check out some of the links in the “Blogs We Read” sidebar.

Seize Life. It is yours and you are free to do with it as you wish. Remember that no one on their dying bed has ever started a sentence with “I wish that I hadn’t tried…” but many have instead said “I wish that I had the courage to…” or “I wish I had spent more time with…”.

I know what I am going to do. I am going to toss that miserable looking plant and get another one that will live it’s life to the fullest. Carpe Vitem.

For the Love of Hot Bread

As I write this in the cockpit wrapped in a blanket, I must say I’m feeling pretty good with myself. The Saturday morning air is brisk and the late autumn sun is sparkling off the glassy water as it...

How we got here

So, I guess you may be wondering what could have gone so wrong in these people’s lives that they gave it all up to go live in a tiny space (with kids nonetheless)? Ever since Sheree and I met, we...
